Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa, saw a need for change and tackled it head on. He focused on getting rid of the apartheid by working to destroy racism. He went to jail for 27 years for conspiracy to overthrow the government. He soon became a symbol for the necessary change and people were protesting to free Mandela. He was willing to have a life in prison in order to do what was right. Once he was freed, to be able to create change he knew he could not be bitter, he had to be bigger than it all. In 1933 he earned a Nobel peace prize. He became South Africa's first black president. Mandela was willing to suffer so much in the name of humanity.
